Marketing is about creating valuable offers. This is not really enlightening for laypersons. So let's try something more practical: In simple terms, marketing is all about the needs of (potential) customers.

The aim is to include the customers wishes and expectations in all corporate decisions and thus to achieve certain corporate goals. First and foremost, of course, this is to increase sales: that is, to sell more of a product or service. Accordingly, marketing in a company is always associated with the analysis, planning, implementation and control of company activities. Marketing is therefore a central function of corporate management and therefore an important part of business management.

What types of marketing are there?

Marketing theory has been so successful since it was introduced over 100 years ago that there are now a number of specific terms that describe particular marketing approaches, including:

  • Influencer marketing: collaboration with social media personalities
  • Viral Marketing: Trying to Generate Word of Mouth
  • Cross media marketing: Targeted advertising messages via different channels at the same time
  • Event marketing: organizing events that are then associated with the brand
  • Direct marketing: advertising messages are sent to potential buyers via direct emails or mail

Online and Offline Marketing

Online and offline can complement each other. Ideally, the so-called ROPO Effect is achieved through parallel marketing measures. This means that the customer can find out about a product online and then buy it in the store. However, this effect can also have the opposite effect and direct customers to their own online shop.

The two types of marketing differ - according to the name - primarily in terms of which means of communication are used. Offline marketing primarily uses analog media such as magazines or advertising posters, while online marketing uses digital elements such as advertising banners or even advertising games.
